Fazenda Rio Verde is a very large coffee estate with a different approach which is steeped in history and innovation. Founded in 1887 by the Gomas Fernandes family and now owned by Ipanema coffees the farm is 1566 hectares with 626 hectares dedicated to coffee production. 773 hectares of the farm are given to environmental preservation and the remaining 167 hectares are food crops.
The farm is divided into 69 ‘glebes’ or plots the separation is based on that glebes micro-climate. The coffee from each glebe is assigned a code the coffee we chose was A50. A50 is 2.39 hectares at an elevation of 1109 - 1136 metres above sea level and the varietal is 100% Red Acaia.
We chose this coffee firstly because it really stood out from the other Brazilian samples we were tasting. Later we discovered that this was due to the fact it had been hand picked and it’s a washed coffee not typical at all for coffee farming in Brazil.
