La Plata - Decaf - Sugarcane EA Coffee

This coffee is produced by various small holders in and around the town of La Plata in the Huila region of southern Colombia. Typical farmers in this region will own 2-4 hectares of land and picking and processing is usually carried out by 2-3 people. Farming is very much a family affair here and the main harvest is from October to December.

This decaffeinated coffee has been processed in a non-chemical manner, this is very important to us as we want to showcase quality coffee in a clean way, with the finished product having 0.1 -0.3% caffeine content.

This process works by soaking green coffee in a bath of water and a solvent called ethyl acetate, which is naturally derived from fermented sugar, among other natural sources. The solvent bonds to the salts of chlorogenic acid within the coffee, which allows for the extraction of caffeine. The coffee is removed from its bath and steamed at low pressure to ensure no traces of ethyl acetate are left.
