Fazenda Serra Negra is located within Patrocínio in Minas Gerais. Minas Gerais is the Brazilian state with the largest acreage of coffee at (1.22 million hectares) and Patrocínio is a very important municipality within that, with 78% of the economy there linked to coffee growing.

Itagiba Ferreira Cortes Neto, the owner of Fazenda Serra Negra bought his first seven hectares back in 1984 and the first trees he planted are still producing coffee, which is truly testament to his agronomic skill! Now the farm is 136 hectares and additionally to growing coffee grows potatoes, garlic, onions, soybeans, maize, sorghum, wheat, beans and rears cattle, the farm has grown to the point that it now employs 234 people.

Serra Negra is a naturally processed Catuai, a varietal that’s widely favoured in Brazil for its good yield and cup profile. Also Catuai is a dwarf varietal with trees that are fairly compact and therefore easier to harvest. Brazilian coffees tend to be grown at a fairly low altitude by arabica standards and this one is no exception, with the farm sitting at around 1000 metres above sea level. The lower altitude is one factor that contributes to the lower acidity cup profile often associated with Brazilian coffees. We love this coffee as it has that classic Brazilian flavour profile; rounded and full bodied with loads of chocolate and nuts.
