Aquiares Estate is an inspirational farm, the estate is commonly referred to as “Aquiares Coffee and Community”. It was originally founded in 1890 but the transformation towards the community forward project it is today began when Alfonso Robelo arrived in the 1980s. With a background in politics he took to making Aquiares as utopian as possible, in particular by offering the 200 homes on the estate to be bought by the employees who lived in them and in general working to ensure worker well being and progression opportunities were the top priority. The farm is now managed by Alfonso’s son Diego, who continues his fathers amazing work along with a dedicated team. The farm is certified Carbon Neutral and invests heavily in research into sustainable practices.

At Round Hill we love Peaberries. Peaberries are named for their pea-like appearance, it is a mutation where only one seed forms in the coffee cherry and with nothing to push against it and impede its growth, that one seed grows into a little round ball. We also love coffee from Aquiares, so we were very excited when we heard they had a ‘Grand Peaberry’ apparently named for the larger than average screen size of their peaberries (peaberries are typically quite small). These ‘Grand Peaberries’ come from an array of varietals grown at the farm. This lot was mechanically washed and dried in solar driers for 18 to 24 days.
