This microlot is a naturally processed mix of Yellow and Red Catuai from Sitio Penha an 18 hectare farm owned by a young couple, Luís Fernando de Moraes and Carliane Guelere in Minas Gerais. 18 Hectares is a fairly small farm size by Brazilian standards, the farm is less mechanised than some of the bigger farms we work with, the couple are chiefly responsible for harvesting, drying and storing the beans and produce on average 400 sacks of green coffee a year. All of their coffees are processed as naturals, with the drying happening on a paved patio.

Both Luis and Carliane are from coffee producing families and both decided to pursue the family business but to strike out on their own to do things their own way. They’ve been running Sitio Penha since they got married in 2012. They joined a cooperative called Cooxupe which in 2021 in conjunction with a program called Especialissimo their coffees were recognised as being of a very high quality.

Sitio Penha is a very recent discovery to us at Round Hill but this is already one of our favourite Brazilian lots of the year. Hopefully we can return to buying coffee from the farm next year and perhaps buy a larger volume.
