Serra Negra is an amazing 136 hectare farm in Patrocinio, Minas Gerais, as well as coffee they grow potatoes, garlic, onions, soybeans, maize, sorghum, wheat, beans and they rear cattle. The owner Itagiba Ferreira Cortes Neto is passionate about agriculture in general but especially about coffee, as well as growing a huge amount of coffee they also roast and brew coffee meticulously.

Itagiba’s father was a fertiliser salesman and he took Itagiba with him to visit the farms. These trips inspired him and at 15 he attended an agriculture course and when he turned 18 he went to study agricultural sciences at the Federal University of Goiás. A couple of years after this in 1984 he bought seven hectares of land and planted his first coffee plant, these plants are still producing coffee today and his farm has grown a lot!

Serra Negra is a naturally processed Catuai, a varietal that’s widely favoured in Brazil for its good yield and cup profile. Catuai is also a dwarf varietal with trees that are fairly compact and therefore easier to harvest. Brazilian coffees tend to be grown at a fairly low altitude by arabica standards and this one is no exception, with the farm sitting at around 1000 metres above sea level. The lower altitude is one factor that contributes to the lower acidity cup profile often associated with Brazilian coffees. We love this coffee as it has that classic Brazilian flavour profile; rounded and full bodied with loads of chocolate and nuts.
