This coffee is the first we’ve bought through Omwani, an import company that works exclusively in East Africa. This coffee was a collaboration between Omwani and the Migoti Hill Coffee Company based in Kayanza, Burundi. Migoti owns and operates a washing station which buys cherries from smallholders who grow coffee surrounding Lake Tanganyika.
The Migoti Hill Coffee Company built its washing station in 2016 on the side of Migoti Mountain, and has grown to process 300 tonnes of cherry each year. It has a small team of 10 permanent staff, as well as over 250 temporary workers who are employed during the coffee season from March to June. The company name, Migoti, is the name of a local indigenous tree as well as the name of the mountain, so it holds a lot of importance.
Almost 100% of Burundi’s coffee production is now Arabica, with approximately 800,000 families working in the industry. Typically Bourbon varieties are grown, and these varieties paired with high elevation are what give Burundi its sweet cup profile with bright acidity. This delicious coffee gives us just that, it is jammy, bright, full-bodied and syrupy.
