The Gatomboya factory is a mill located in Nyeri, in the foothills of Mount Kenya. The factory is managed by the Barichu Farmers Cooperative Society and processes cherries from around 700 smallholders. Farm plots average just 0.4 hectares, predominantly growing the highly coveted SL28 and SL34 varietals under the shade of Gravellea, Macadamia and Eucalyptus trees.
Barichu is renowned for the strong management of their mills, and superlative treatment of their team and the local community. Members of the coop are able to access several schemes aimed at enhancing living standards, including significant training options and credit for schooling or medical emergencies. At Gatomboya there is also a coffee shop on the factory grounds, with the income being used to subsidise the associated costs of the mill.
Jammy, bright and full of dark red fruit, this is a gorgeous example of Kenyan AA coffee.
