Francisco Alvarado and his wife have owned El Durazno for 15 years. They are constantly striving to increase quality by meticulously managing every stage through to processing and drying. El Durazno is in the Masaguara municipality in Intibuca and sits at 1700 metres above sea level.
Francisco is part of a collective of 60 farmers in the Pozo Negro
region who support each other by sharing expertise and ideas, and by
contributing towards bigger purchases like milling equipment. Perhaps
the most significant advantage of this community structure is that they
can produce enough coffee to work with importers. Nordic Approach have
been buying from the Pozo Negro farmers for a few years, purchasing
blended volume lots alongside small single-farm lots such as this one.
Without this collaborative approach many of these smallholders would only have access to local markets rather than the higher prices associated with the speciality market. Going forward, the aim is that importers and roasters like us can help to provide security through year-on-year buying.
We cupped a lot of coffees from the Pozo Negro community this year and this was one of the standouts.
