This coffee is comprised of microlots grown across the remote
mountainous area of Ywangan, southern Shan state, Myanmar, and
is produced by Mandalay Coffee Group. The smallholder farmers are
predominantly from Danu and Pa-O hill tribes, working between 0.25 and
3 acres of land. Coffee is intercropped with avocados, jackfruit, papaya
and macadamia nuts.
Mandalay Coffee Group was formed in 2014 and is owned by local citizens, many of whom have been involved in the coffee industry for over 30 years. Their goal is to increase the income of coffee farmers in the area. Despite the widespread political turmoil and fighting in Myanmar, the coffee industry is enabling sustainable livelihoods and investment in infrastructure and healthcare.
This Red Catuai is hand sorted before being taken to the Mandalay Coffee Group’s processing mill in Pyin Oo Lwin. Here it is floated for density, pulped and fermented in ceramic tanks overnight. The lots are rinsed then dried for 7-10 days on concrete patios.
The quality of the coffees coming out of Myanmar has radically improved over the last few years, and we are loving this clean, creamy and sweet cup.
